The bathroom is a place...
to empty my bladder, shit unimaginable sizes of poop and place to wash away my day. It has been the place I have cried alone, with my closest friends and with some of the men in my life. It has been my sanctuary when everything else around me is screaming. It has been the place where I have smiled bigger and brighter then ever; satisfied with what I see in the mirror, or happy to learn I was going to be a Mama. It has been a place to study or get caught up on worldly events. It has been the place I have snooped around in and found more than I bargained for. It has been the place where the message is so loud staring at me, I can’t believe I didn’t think of it myself. It has been a place to rest my head or catch my vomit when I have been sick or too drunk. It has been the wall, the sink, the shower, the toilet that has held me up when I was being ravished. It has been a place where I learned that the people I love have cheated, lied, and put more things up their noses or through their veins then I care to think about. It has been a place to meet-up, catch-up and often make-up with people who managed to wiggle their way into my heart. It has been the only quiet place where I can wrap my head around my next move, to catch me breath when my ego has been ROCKED. It has been the start of a conversation or debate or an act that has changed my perspective on life and living. It has been…
What I want from you
You tell me, tell us. Unlock your bathroom door and share your experience. Elaborate on the details; the color of the walls, the feel of the floor, the people, the smell that lingers, the taste in your mouth, the noise on the outside, the stories on the inside, the unforeseen message, the raunchy, the I can’t believe I lived to tell about it, the TRUTH, the shame, the elation. Write it down, take a picture, draw a picture, recreate it in 3-D, record it. Do one or all. Don’t have a computer or just feel better mailing it in: (I plan on getting that address sometime early this week...promise)
Why Bathrooms?
“What do you have to do…go check out the bathroom!”
A phrase I heard over and over and over again as a kid. Nagging my mother to take me just minutes after arriving anywhere new. I could swear even now at 32 that I really do have to have to go to the bathroom, like I did at 5 when I grabbed a hold of my moms hand, or ask for the bathroom location, when I start making my way through the crowds and through strange hallways. I really do have to pee when I arrive, waiting, sometimes standing in line for far too long. Then when the door opens or if I am lucky to be the only one… its my turn and nothing. Nothing…maybe a dribble, a drop but mostly a whole lot of nothing. Only to find my way back to the bathroom a few moments later.
For awhile I thought this habit was formed from childhood curiosity, or the decorating that may have enticed me, then I thought it was the cleanliness (I figured a clean bathroom makes for a clean kitchen) or maybe its the telling objects one chooses to place in their bathroom. One day in TGIF, having cocktails with a friend, I realized after stumbling along a lost, tearful girl and her wicked mother that what I like about bathrooms is not what they are traditionally used for but the things you might see, the conversations you might hear, the thoughts you might have and of course top of my list; the things you might do.

What is Unlock the Bathroom Door
Unlock the Bathroom Door… is both a web site and a series of exhibitions comprised by the work of the general public. Persons who submit their experiences through text, images or recordings will see their work posted on-line and possibly be included in a presentation that might consist of exhibits, books, screening and radio broadcast. Unlock the Bathroom Door is intended to be an artistic, expressive resource to people who are looking to share their experiences and maybe even learn a bit about themselves in the process.
